1.4 – Dioxane
1,4-dioxane is an impurity that may be present in trace amounts in some cosmetics and personal care products. 1,4-dioxane itself is not used as an intentionally added ingredient but can form as a by-product during the manufacturing process of certain ethoxylated ingredients, such as cosmetics containing sodium laureth sulfate or polyethylene glycol which are usually used in cosmetics and personal care products, including cleansing materials (i.e., detergents), foaming agents, emulsifiers, and solvents.
1,4-dioxane is a potential human carcinogen. The compound 1,4-dioxane is a trace contaminant in some cosmetic products. Because of that we need some sophisticated instruments to detect the 1,4-dioxane and give an accurate result.
In Indonesia 1,4-dioxane in cosmetics is regulated at PerBPOM No. 12 of 2019 of 25 mg/kg or 25 mg/L for all cosmetic products.
How SIG can help
SIG Laboratory can perform 1,4 – Dioxane analysis on a wide variety of cosmetics. Our tests also ascertain whether the 1,4-Dioxane are at the appropriate levels, as specified by national and international regulations.
Method of Analysis
GC method is the most likely technique to be used for testing 1,4-dioxane with many detectors such as mass spectrometry and are equipped with a headspace injection system which aims to increase the detection limit of the test method.
